Digital Readymades

Sponsor: www.ponoko.com and www.shapeways.com

My project aims to reinvigorate broken or discarded objects, and re-appropriate existing objects, to extend their lives. The traditional readymade with a digital twist. The project utilises digital technologies, including laser cutting and rapid prototyping, which are accessible to the general public through online resources including Ponoko and Shapeways.

The project aims to explore manufacturing on demand (as opposed to mass manufacture), democratic design and hacking as contemporary responses to the subject of sustainable design, as well as raising awareness of the possibilities of these readily accessible resources and the possibilities they present. All digital files will be available for download from www.researchandobject.com

Solar Chandelabra (designed with Nicola Jackson)
A flat pack, laser cut outdoor ambient lamp, using cheap solar garden lamps. The shape references traditional chandeliers but takes its inspiration from flora found in the garden. It can be hung as a chandelier, or placed on a surface as a chandelier, uses solar power, and turns on automatically when there is insufficient light.

USB KEYS (Data Stream and H1N1)
USB keys are ubiquitous, but eventually break from over usage. Data Stream revitalises a USB key that was used soley for moving information from laptop to desktop. USB ports are hidden behind the screen of the 24 inch iMac, so it is easy to leave a USB key in the machine. Data Stream is a sculptural addition to the USB key, which protrudes from the side of the iMac. A physical reminder to remember your data.

H1N1 is a broken, but functioning, USB key attached to a rapid prototyped Stainless Steel ring. The rings form is developed from images of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, to act as a reminder to back up your data and beware of viruses.
